Lucien Vanserra

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

[OOC]

Player: Fern (it/they pronouns)

Contact: PMs preferred, veryfern on both discord and plurk

Format: Prose slightly preferred, but happy to match!

Backtagging: YES! No worries! But also I would ALWAYS prefer a handwave to a dropped thread, so feel free to reach out with a handwave at any time. I also tend to reach out with handwaves when I can feel my fickle muse losing interest in a thread. Please know that this is nothing against you or your character if it happens.

Threadhopping: In casual "network"-type posts, sure! In more action based posts, reach out first, and be ready to wait your turn.

Fourthwalling: Non-ACOTAR PCs, reach out first! Game NPCs and ACOTAR PCs, you do not need permission if you would have that knowledge or are from a future cannon point.

Offensive subjects (elaborate): Please avoid diet/weight/fitness/ED talk. Otherwise, please don't hesitate to put my boy in Situations. He was meant to be a damsel in distress. You can trust that I will PM you if I am uncomfy, but feel free to drop me a line if you're in doubt!

NOT INTERESTED IN: OOC, Shipping/Meta discourse beyond lighthearted snark. Spoilers, serious speculation, or leaks about the next book. I read this stuff through audiobooks from the library so please be patient with me when the next book comes out, lol

[IC]

Hugging this character: Yes! Lucien himself is fairly reserved when it comes to touch, but generally far too polite to reject it.

Kissing this character: Yes! I am down to roleplay anything with all genders up to and including intense makeout sessions, though I do expect some build up to or reason for anything particularly steamy.

Flirting with this character: Definitely. He's likely to start.

Fighting with this character: Yes! Lucien is trained with daggers, swords, hand-to-hand and bows. He heals much faster than most humans, and could easily overpower most adult humans. If that all sounds good to you, let's go!

Sex with this character: Reach out! I will probably prefer fade-to-black at least the first couple go-rounds.

Relationships: I'm honestly down for anything with all genders. Reach out to me if you wanna start anything serious, but know that I am not interested in playing him as monogamous and you WILL be hearing about his dead girlfriend and doomed situationship, whether from him or from me in flavor text lol.

Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Yes, up to and including broken bones and dislocations. Unless the injury is extreme, repeated extensively over time, or magical in nature, Lucien is going to heal from it much faster than a human. TW for any R-rated levels of gore, and reach out if you want to do any truly longlasting damage.

Killing this character: Probably yes, but I'll want to plot it out first!

Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Yes. Feel free to muck about in his head, and make sure to let me know if you do in text so I can give you all the juicy deets! Lucien does not have mental magic BUT has been trained in how to defend against a very specific kind of it. That being said, he isn't very good at it even when he's not nerfed by Amarantha, and his mental defenses are weakened even further right now. If you come on super strong, he'll notice and try and defend against it, and he won't like it at all. But it's not like those defenses are very strong or passively up.

Warnings: References to his prosthetic eye will be common in my tagging. Eye Trauma, Death, Grief, Familial Abuse, Abandonment, and Gore are all in his past, and all that plus war and explicit sexual abuse are in his canon future. Please feel free to opt out to any or all of that here!

🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Lucien Vanserra
Age: "over 70, under 500" is the canon range so I'll go with in his 280s
Canon: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Canon Point: First book, around chapter 38. Lucien is still recovering offscreen from his punishment for helping Feyre in her first trial Under The Mountain
Character History: Wiki Link
Canon Abilities: For more in-depth explanations, on what these abilities do, where he is described using them in cannon, and how I extrapolated the way these have been changed by the curse, please check out my Character Information post. The wiki really is not very thorough on this front. I am open to nerfing any of these abilities further if needed!
Physical:
  • High Fae Body Stuff: super speed, quick healing body, super strength, impervious to most airborne disease, immortal.

  • Hunting Lucien is noted to be a particularly skilled hunter

Magical: At his current canon point, Lucien is currently under a curse that weakens all of his magical abilities and has not discovered all of them!
  • Mental Shields Lucien has been trained to defend against the Daemati, fairies with the ability to enter and influence other peoples minds. Even after the curse is broken, he is not very skilled in this area.

  • Glamours: Superficial, visual illusions. At full strength, he could alter the appearance of a whole ballroom, but under the curse, he can only glamour himself or objects smaller than himself.

  • Winnowing: Teleportation! At his strongest, Lucien can winnow a few miles at a time, many times in succession. At his current cannon point, he can manage maybe a few hundred feet.

  • Healing: He can currently heal most superficial cuts and bruises and minor, simple and easy to reach fractures(ie; broken fingers, a broken nose). At full power, we can assume he could heal more extensive or internal injuries.

  • Fire Manipulation: What it says on the tin! At full power, he can bring forth walls of flame. Under the curse he can manage a small ball of flame.

  • Light Generation: He has not realized this is a separate power from his healing and fire stuff, but he can cast light on things. We'll say that at this point, under the curse, his fingertips can glow.

  • Spell Cleaving: Breaking the effects of a spell cast on himself or others. He does not know he has this ability. To use it, the curse would have to be lifted or the only spell he breaks. I'm only interested in this being used in a very extreme, narratively satisfying moment.

Other:
  • Magic/Mechanical Eye: Lucien's prosthetic eye not only functions just as well as a normal eye, but also can see through glamours and illusions. This is unaffected by the curse.

Inventory: Breeches, Shirt, a couple earrings, his mechanical golden eye, and the fox mask (currently not removable due to curse)

🦋 Personality

Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.

  • Green: Green is the color of Spring Court, the opposite end of the spectrum from Autumn's reds and oranges. The color of new leaves, of fresh grasses, and, perhaps most notably for Lucien, a "deep emerald flecked with gold" is the color of his High Lord's eyes. Ever since Tamlin claimed Lucien as his Emissary, Lucien has chosen green as the main color in his clothes. This wasn't something he was ever instructed to do, but a change he naturally slipped into. Back then, it was a visual reminder of the Spring court's protection and his duty as its Emissary. Over the decades, his friendship with Tamlin has grown until green has earned an association in Lucien's heart with safety and friendship. In the past year, though, as he's watched and even at times encouraged his High Lord to fall in love with a human girl in a last-ditch effort to break Amarantha's curse, there is perhaps some bitter irony in its association with envy. (163 words)

  • Friendly: All the Princes of the Autumn Court know to slip on a friendly demeanor and playful charm in order to get what they want, but that friendliness came the most naturally to Lucien. The youngest of his brothers, Lucien was raised by his mother to be gracious and kind, and to treat all fae, High or Low, with compassion and respect. How else would he have fallen for the Lesser Fae, Jesminda? And, even more importantly, how else would Jesminda, with her discerning cleverness, teasing laughter, and disregard for his title, have ever returned his feelings? Even now, knowing that this gift of friendship and love would ultimately lead to her brutal death at the hand of his father, Lucien can't make himself regret a single laugh or smile they shared as they fell in love. When he fled after her death and sought refuge in the Spring Court, his friendliness was the only thing he had to offer in return for Tamlin's protection. Thankfully, the new High Lord of Spring was not gifted in this regard, and saw the value of it enough to give him the title of Emissary. It's almost been a century since then, and Lucien is older and more guarded than he once was with his heart, and he is not above using friendliness as a tool, whether to protect himself or secure something he or his High Lord needs. However, even when hiding it behind snark and bitchiness, his smiles are still more genuine and he is still more friendly than most other High Fae you will meet in Prythian. (266 words)

  • Pride To the Fae, at least where Lucien comes from, pride could easily be considered their most precious form of currency. In both the history of his world and his own personal experiences, there are countless examples of pride being a dangerous and volatile force, bringing about devastating consequences for everyone involved. It was pride in his High Lord that caused Lucien to insult Amarantha while rejecting her proposition to Tamlin, and in return, she left him without an eye, his face forever scarred. And when she extended an invitation to a masquerade, explicitly held as an apology for the damage she had done to Lucien's pride, It was Tamlin's pride in him that led them to accept, walking straight into the Sorceress's trap. And yet, somehow, Lucien is still proud. Pride in himself, sure, but even more powerful is his pride in Tamlin, his High Lord. To an outside observer Under the Mountain, it may seem like Lucien has no pride left, submitting himself to whatever punishment or humiliation Amarantha thinks up next. But every time he's brought forth, he knows that Tamlin hasn't submitted to her yet, and as long as the High Lord stays strong, so will Lucien, up to and including his own death. Far more surprising, then, is Lucien's newfound pride in Feyre, the stubborn ass human who made her way back- made it all the way to the mountain on her own! -and is fighting like hell to save Tamlin and all of the Spring Court. Something in his bones knows that the fae Under the Mountain are making a grave mistake in underestimating the fierce little human. (274 words)

  • Child Child is a loaded term for Lucien. On one hand, the youngest of seven brothers and the youngest of the notable High Fae characters in ACOTAR, Lucien is certainly aware of being considered a child among his peers. He was born after the Great war that split the world into Human and Fae realms, and this is brought up and used against him as an insult explicitly by the Lord of the Night Court. And then there is Feyre, the 19 year old human who has been brought into the Spring Court after killing a high fae, who could break the curse that the spring court is under if she and his High Lord can manage to fall in love. Stubborn, spiteful, petulant and impossibly young, Lucien at first resents, or at the very least does not respect, this child, even going so far as to feed her dangerous information, assure her that he'll be nearby to help, and then purposefully hesitates to save her when he hears her scream when the time comes. As he gets to know her and her story, and watches her and Tamlin fall for eachother, he is appalled at how much suffering she's endured in such a short life and becomes strongly protective of her. He's able to tell himself this protectiveness is only due to Tamlin's love of her and how happy she makes him, until she gives up her name in order to save him from being tortured and quite possibly killed for it. This child, who he should have always protected, saved him, cares for him, and Lucien will not soon forget it. Children should be protected but also respected.(280 words)

  • Fur: A seasoned hunter, Lucien is no stranger to the process of collecting and preparing furs. While not a daily necessity in either the Fall or Spring Courts, There are always those days where a fur garment is appreciated, for its softness, warmth, durability, or all three. This skill became exponentially more valuable when Amarantha's curse drained the spring court of most of its magic. Only Tamlin could still use his powers, and he was not gifted with fire as Lucien had been. When Tamlin shifts into his beast form, both a symbol of protection and danger, he is covered in golden fur. Lucien's feelings about fur is further complicated by the fact that when Feyre kills Andras, another fey who had been searching for her in wolf form, she not only fells him but skins him, and sells that fur at market, a fact that horrifies Lucien despite his familiarity with the process.(153 words)

CANNON: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
CANNON POINT: First book, somewhere around chapter 36-38
    AGE: ~280s
    GENDER: Male
SPECIES: "High Fae" (SJM's hot magic elves)

    [FIRST IMPRESSIONS]

VISUAL: Lucien is like 6'4 ish, has not-quite waist length red hair, and pointed ears. He's always wearing a fox mask made of some kind of bronzey-copperish material, from which peers one russet eye and one golden mechanical prosthetic.
AURAL: His voice isn't particularly low or high, but it's got the confidence of a noble and a light playfulness in it.
OLFACTORY: Autumn Leaves and something Almost Floral
DEMEANOR: As a default, he puts on a haughty, mischievous, confident facade, albeit a little old-fashioned in his mannerisms.

    [GENERAL]

BRIEF BIO: Lucien believes himself to be the exiled seventh son of the High Lord of Autumn. Many decades ago, when he was exiled, Tamlin, the High Lord of Spring, claimed him as the Spring Court's Emissary. 50 years ago, the Spring court was cursed until Tamlin could fall in love with a human, and the human loved him back. Over the past year, Lucien has watched that finally happen, but Tamlin let her go. She returned, but she was too late. Now he is held captive Under The Mountain by the wicked sorceress Amarantha, forced to watch this human fight though brutal challenges to prove her love, and, if she prevails, save the Fae Realms.

CANNON DIVERGENCE: I choose to interpret Lucien as, at the very least, having tragic, unrequited romantic feelings for Tamlin, if not an ambiguous sexual tension/history with him as well. I'm way more interested in the nitty gritty of his mechanical eye than SJM and I love making his ears very expressive. I'm not doing the "male" instead of "man" thing outside of dialogue where he's referring to another high fae.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Lucien has only one eye, and wears a golden prosthetic described above. At his cannon point, he is also suffering from 20 deep slashes across his back from a punishment Tamlin was forced to give him. Amarantha has also cursed these wounds to be Especially Severe and slow-healing.

    [ABILITIES]

PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: Lucien does not have mental magic BUT has been trained in how to defend against a very specific kind of it. That being said, he isn't very good at it even when he's not nerfed by Amarantha, and his mental defenses are weakened even further now. If it comes on super strong, he'll notice and try and defend against it, and he won't like it at all. But it's not like those defenses are very strong or passively up.

MAGICAL INFORMATION: Lucien is a very powerful magical being. However, at his current cannon point and for the last 50 years, he and all the residents of the Spring Court Have been put under a curse by the wicked sorceress Amarantha. The most visible evidence is the masks they cannot remove, but the underlying effect is that all their magic is dramatically weakened. I will do my best to describe both Lucien's true or potential powers, and then lay out what he can presently do in bold.
    • Standard High Fae Powers/Abilities:
      • telekinesis of small items

      • temperature manipulation

      • wind sheilding: protects from physical impacts of thrown items

      • super speed (think edward cullen, not the flash)

      • quick healing body

      • super strength

    • Glamours: Superficial, visual illusions. Lucien has only ever been described using these to dampen how much power he seems to have, hide his appearance being disheveled and injured, and make an object smaller than himself (read: a small human woman) appear invisible. At full strength, he could alter the appearance of a whole ballroom, but under the curse, he can only glamour himself or objects smaller than himself.

    • Winnowing: Teleportation! Must have at least a direction in mind, but is much safer and more accurate with a clearly visualized destination. Goes through most walls and obstacles, but watch out! Winnowing accidents are rare, as the magic usually snaps to an open space, but they can happen. The distance you can go in one winnow, as well as how many times you can winnow in sequence, depends on your skill, focus, stamina, and willpower. Anyone in physical contact will come with you. At his strongest, Lucien can winnow a few miles at a time, many times in succession. At his current cannon point, he can manage maybe a few hundred feet.

    • Healing: In addition to his fast-healing-high-fae body, Lucien can also heal others with physical touch. His fingers glow and warm up when he does this. At his current cannon point, he has been shown healing cuts, bruises, and a broken nose, so we'll say he can currently heal most superficial injuries and minor, simple fractures. He could heal more extensive and internal injuries without the curse.

    • Fire Manipulation: What it says on the tin! At full power, he can bring forth walls of flame. Under the curse, he can manage a small ball of flame.

    • Light Generation: Undiscovered. He has not realized this is a separate power from his healing and fire stuff, but he can cast light on things. We'll say that at this point, under the curse, his fingertips can glow as bright as a small flame

    • Spell Cleaving: Undiscovered. In the second book, when in a situation of absolute distress for his mate, Lucien is able to shatter a petrification spell cast on himself. This is after the curse has been lifted so I will treat it as mostly nonexistent. Hypothetically, it would only emerge in an extreme moment and to help another person, not to save himself. The curse would have to be lifted to use this power, or be the only spell he breaks. (If you have an idea for it to come into play, feel free to reach out!)

    • Mechanical Magic Eye: Lucien's prosthetic eye not only funtions just as well as a normal eye, but also can see through glamours and illusions. This is unaffected by the curse.
